Field Closures and Scheduling - Storm Damage

Mike Ohlson

Attention Baseball and Softball Families:

The March snow storms caused significant damage throughout our area.  Our baseball and softball programs were not spared inconvenience from these damages. Within the Warren township community the following fields were damaged, are closed and are off-limits to baseball and softball activity until further notice: Municipal M4, Municipal M6, Central 1, Central 2, Middle School Softball

The Township and the Board of Education are involved with field repairs but there are widespread field damage issues throughout the geographic area and we do not expect the backstop repairs to occur in the foreseeable future.  We are forced to schedule our season without use of the above mentioned fields. It is critical that we abide by the field closures and keep all baseball and softball activity off these fields until they are repaired and approved for our use as there are safety concerns with insurance/financial repercussions.

From a scheduling point of view, we are challenged to find space for all our youth baseball and softball activities.  We ask your support and your patience as we work through the field scheduling challenge and process. For scheduling purposes, games are always our first priority with Spring Rec season games as our highest priority.  We can find sufficient space and time to schedule all rec and town travel games on Fields M1, M2, M3 and M5. But each individual team may not get the field they want at the time they want it. Most significantly, finding practice time on a diamond for each team at each age level will be a challenge.

Flexibility and creativity will be necessary from team managers at all levels.  The following is a list of suggestions for planning around this inconvenience:

  1. We will need to look at all available fields which include several that do not have lights.  We’ll need to maximize use of fields available in Watchung (for integrated Warren/Watchung teams) and maximize use of our secondary fields.

  2. Grass spaces and secondary fields will need to be utilized for our younger developmental programs as the diamond space is needed for the teams which require a structured field for their games.

  3. With our recent improvement of batting cage lights, we need to give priority to team batting practices after the 6pm games are started.

  4. Be mindful that there are field requirements for different levels of our youth programs.  For example, Major boys require a 50/70 field format which is only available on field M3 and softball can not play on a field with a pitching mound.  Commissioners at each level know the available and suitable fields and will work to find available space.

With cooperation, flexibility and patience, we will get past this scheduling dilemma.  We have scheduling solutions drafted in pencil but they do require moving quite a few events around.  Please support our efforts through a spirit of cooperation.
